Drawing inspiration from California’s endless natural beauty, potter and surfer Coco Barrett-Tormey of Coco Chispa creates hand-thrown ceramics in her seaside hometown of Santa Cruz. In her shared studio only blocks from the Pacific Ocean, she depicts scenic scapes of the surrounding mountains, deserts, and waterbodies while employing her own hand carving and painting techniques.
We are smitten with the subtle differences that each piece of Coco’s pottery features. The ever-changing landscapes and climate of California can be admired through the visual stories of her work. She has managed to capture the romance of west coast wilderness in the humblest of wares which include mugs, bowls, and even mountain inspired canteens.
The rustic artistry of Coco’s earthenware not only reminds us of the breadth of west coast beauty, but the very intention of these vessels encourages us to stop, take a breath, and savor the moment. As you’re sipping on your favorite beverage, Coco hopes you’ll remember to care for yourself while you appreciate your surroundings. She admits that art exists in both the creation of the piece AND in your daily use of it.
As a fair warning, these treasures will find new homes quickly so get your hands on one before they are gone!
