I first came across Ferdinand’s Co. at a craft festival. Their leather goods were hung from wooden branch-like poles, and I was immediately taken aback by their strong aesthetic. The black and white cow hide and tanned leather items were impeccably constructed, yet maintained the raw and natural artistry Makers Market looks for.
Dane Alderfer, the maker behind Ferdinand’s explained his process with fervor. He hand-selects all his materials and creates each piece by hand on an industrial sewing machine. He is inspired by old things, folk culture, and the irregularities found in that which is handmade.
His resolve to capture utility and beauty in his products, as well as his desire to restore to our disposable society the practice of caring and maintaining what we own, evokes the very spirit of Makers Market. His products debuted in our shop the next day.
